Fiona Mackenzie
Steeped in the Scots Folk tradition and particularly in Burns' work from an early age, Fiona Mackenzie learned Gaelic to fluency as an adult and began singing in Gaelic in 1995. She won the Premier award for Gaelic singing in Scotland, the prestigious Ladies Gold Medal, for fluent speakers, at the Royal National Mod in Stornoway in 2005. In 2004 she won the coveted BBC Scotland Traditional Music Personality of the Year Award at the Scots Traditional Awards. She was also nominated as Gaelic Singer of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. Fiona has released two CDs, the latest of which – "Duan Nollaig" – the world's first ever Scottish Gaelic Christmas CD, was released in December 2007 to great critical acclaim. Fiona broadcasts frequently for BBC and ITV, and has also published three books of Gaelic song; the latest based on the "Duan Nollaig" CD, and entitled The Duan Nollaig Gaelic Carol Book (2008), the only book of its kind in existence. Fiona performs regularly, and with various band formations, working alongside some of the best traditional musicians in Scotland. She is often accompanied by Katie Mackenzie (2008 Graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, in Gaelic Song and Clarsach) and Irvin Duguid, who produced the "Duan Nollaig" CD. Irvin arranges many songs for Fiona and is currently working on a new collection of arrangements of Burns songs. Fiona's repertoire is extensive, covering both Gaelic and Scots Song. She is particularly keen in 2009, Year of the Homecoming, to perform her collection of songs by Robert Burns, performed in BOTH Gaelic and Scots, one of few artists to do this. She also has an extensive catalogue of classical song. Fiona is happy to consider performances in large and smaller venues, corporate work, weddings and festivals. She can also deliver informative and entertaining song lectures on topics such as the Gaelic Bardess Mairi Mhor nan Oran. For more details on fees and availability please contact us.
