Laura McGhee
Laura McGhee started playing the fiddle in 1990, and in 1993 she won her first fiddle prize at the Aberfeldy Mod, playing the Gaelic air "My Brown-haired Maiden". She followed this with many other successes, including winning first prize in the violin section of the Dundee Festival of Traditional Music in 1996, and claiming the same achievement in the Musselburgh Open Fiddle Championship in 1998. Following on from this in 1998, Laura also made her first radio broadcast on Radio Scotland's "Take the Floor". In 1999, Laura secured her place at the junior RSAMD, where she eventually gained a First Class Honours Degree in classical violin. She continued to go from strength to strength over the next few years, working with artists Pete Seeger, Odetta, Jim Lauderdale, Ian Hunter, Shane MacGowan and Runrig. Laura's musical style is varied, but she loves the crossover between the music of Scotland and America's Deep South. She often works these days in Nashville, recording this kind of music. Laura has also written a traditional classical concerto entitled "The Arbroath Suite", which traces the history of Scotland's music from the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 to the present day. www.myspace.com/arbroathsuiteproject More recently, Laura has appeared in America with Phil Cunningham and Capercaillie at New York's Tartan Day, as well as appearing on stage with Shane MacGowan at Celtic Connections (Barrowlands) in 2005. That same year, Laura played as a session musician on Runrig's new album. 2006 saw the release of the Laura's first album "Green Eyes". Many more live appearances followed, and details of these can be found on Laura's own website. Laura's new album "Celticana" is due for release in February 2009. Laura works with a 6-piece band, and as a trio too. For the Arbroath Suite, this involves a 7-piece band. We would be happy to discuss your requirements. To book Laura, please contact Northbeat.
